With a keen, stoic, humanist and ironic eye Jan Reich was one of the great late-20th-century European masters of large-format black-and-white photography.

His album “Bohemia”, published in a hauntingly beautiful edition by his wife Jana Reichová in 2005, evoked the rich, melancholy history of the Czech Lands.  Reich heightened the impact of the photos in this album through understated tonality, seemingly infinite depth of field, and careful choice of angle of view to suggest the tension between nature’s resilience and man’s desire to impose his own architectural order, whether reverent or grandiose.

Reich had a masterly ability to show the screen of timeless nature in front of and around man’s sometimes noble, but always temporal, world.  In”Bohemia” he often composed his photos with man’s creations in a subordinate position to that of their natural context.  Both elements of his style have influenced my own approach to landscape and village photography in Belarus.

Дзякуючы свайму востраму, трываламу, спагадліваму ды іранічнаму погляду, Ян Рэйх стаў адным з найвыбітнейшых эўрапейскіх майстраў канца 20-га стагоддзя ў галіне вялікафарматнай чорна-белай фатаграфіі.

Альбом Рэйха “Багемія”, выдадзены жонкай майстра Янай Рэйховай у 2005 годзе, зачароўвае сваёй прыгажосьцю; ён выклікае да жыцьця багатую і поўную суму гісторыю чэскіх земляў. Фотаздымкі Рэйха ўзьдзейнічаюць тым мацней, чым больш спакойнай ёсьць іх танальнасьць, чым бліжэй да бясконцай здаецца глыбіня адлюстраванай прасторы і чым больш старанна ён абірае кропку гледжаньня, каб скіраваць унутраны позірк гледача на непакорнасьць прыроды ды імкненьне чалавека ўсталяваць уласны – пабожны ці пампэзны – архітэктурны парадак.

Рэйх быў здольны па-майстэрску супрацьпаставіць вобраз вечнай прыроды і сьвет чалавека, часам высакародны, але такі хуткаплынны. Для здымкаў, што ўвайшлі ў “Багемію”, ён часта абіраў сродкі кампазіцыі, што дазвалялі паставіць створанае чалавекам у падпарадкаванае да яго прыроднага асяроддзя становішча. Абедзьве гэтыя характарыстыкі стылю Рэйха паўплывалі мой падыход да фатаграфаваньня краявідаў і вёсак Беларусі.

Polesian Whimsy:

The first photo shows a cafe whose name in Russian, Бутербродная романтика (“Butjerbrodnaja ramantjika”; the Belarusan would be written, and pronounced, differently: Бутэрбродная рамантыка), can be translated as “Romance of the Open-Faced Sandwich”.

The second photo shows a country store whose name, Стырь (written in Russian), while referring to the Styr (Стыр in Belarusan, Стир in Ukrainian), a Ukrainian-Belarusan tributary of Polesia’s main river, the Prypjats’, also means “steal!” in Russian slang.

In honor of Belarusan poets, part I:

Анатоль Сыс (Anatol’ Sys), 1959-2005.  A native of Haroshkau in Rechytsa district of the Pripet region of southern Belarus, and a devoted voice of the Belarusan language, Sys published three anthologies during the meteoric poetic trajectory of his short life.  The first was Агмень (“Ahmjen’”), a rarely-used Belarusan word meaning “hearth” and symbolizing for Sys his Belarusan homeland, in 1988.  Next came Пан лес (“Pan Ljes”, or “Lord Forest”, again symbolizing his homeland) in 1989.  The third anthology, Сыс (Sys), appeared in 2002.

The poem below, Радзіма пачынаецца з жанчыны (“Homeland beginneth with a woman”), contains images and symbols linking some of the deepest Belarusan pre-Christian points of reference (fire and its warmth; the drifting ice of winter which covers, but never stills, the rivers and lakes beneath) with the quiet, rooted Belarusan points of reference of everyday life.  These latter images include chopping firewood, with the attendant connotation for every Belarusan of quiet and determined labor and the neatness of the stacked wood as the sign of a house well cared for; a son’s reverence for his mother; and the light, heat and inspiration that a true fire (of love, of devotion to one’s homeland) gives as it lives on despite the (metaphoric) bitter cold of winter.  It is also worth noting that Радзіма (“Radzima”) is feminine in gender and contains the same root as the word for “birth”.
