It would be difficult to find anyone else younger at heart than these three witty, wise, and hard-working grannies, whom I had the pleasure of meeting in 2008.  Now  Granny Iryna is 71 years young, Granny Aljona has just turned 90 years young, and Granny Jusefa is 87 years young.   A bow to all three.

Цяжка было б знайсьці кагосьці маладзейшага сэрцам за гэтых дасьціпных, мудрых і працавітых бабулечак, з якімі я меў задавальненьне пазнаёміцца ў 2008 годзе. Цяпер бабулі Ірыне 71 год, бабулі Алёне толькі споўнілася 90, а бабулі Юзэфе – 87. Паклон усім тром.

The northern Belarusan city of Ljepjel’ is a district administrative center of about 18,500 inhabitants in the region (voblas’ts’) of Vitsjebsk.  Ljepjel’ lies at the edge of an extensive band of river-linked lakes and grew prosperous when water routes were the principal means of transport.  The city retains some of a fine late 19th century architectural patrimony.

Church of St. Casimir (1857-76).  The Soviet authorities used the church as a machinery depot:  oil stains remain visible on the wall (center left in the second photo) of the church, which was re-consecrated in 1995.
