Ljubavichy 2010/Любавічы 2010 год

A father with three of his four children.  With large families and an ethic of sobriety and hard work, the long-rooted Evangelical Christian communities in the Central Prypjats’ region of Polesia (Pripet Marshes) are exceptionally productive.  Many members of these communities have relatives in the Spokane, Washington area.

Preparing for Trinity Sunday, Rubjel’ 2010/

One admires profoundly how strongly the people of Rubjel’ have revived, and tend, their faith and traditions.  Reflecting the vibrancy of this attachment and the willingness of parents to pass on their traditions, these boys, instead of playing with their other pals on a warm Saturday evening, are busy laying down reeds to prepare for the next day’s celebration of Trinity Sunday.  A bow to their parents.

Members of Rubjel’s Orthodox church choir, on their way home from practice, expressed their pride at the boys’ diligence.

Preparing for Trinity Sunday, Zapjasochcha 2010/

This granny is on her way to her church on May 22, the Saturday before Trinity in 2010, to lay reeds on the floor of the nave.   To mark Trinity Belarusans spread marsh reeds (recalling that Christ’s first disciples were fishermen) in the entryway of their home, on the ground before the church, and in the nave of the church.  They also hang branches of young birch (or sometimes poplar or oak, but the birch, which leafs earlier, is seen as especially symbolic of the fertile power of the soil and in a Christian sense symbolic of the life-giving force of the Holy Spirit) beside the doorway to their home, the entrance to the church, and within the church.
