Ascension Day and Burying of the Arrow/Узьнясеньне й Пахаваньне стралы

Ascension Day (May 13 in 2010), which falls on the fortieth day after Easter, coincides with the pre-Christian Belarusan fertility rite of the burying of the arrow (Пахаваньне стралы — pakhavan’nje straly).  Burying of the arrow, in which women, principally grandmothers, walk to a rye field, bury a sharp object, roll in the rye, and collect an odd number of rye stalks, is now carried out in only a handful of Belarusan villages in the Vjetka and Chachersk districts of Homjel’ Region in eastern Belarus.  In Staubun the local orthodox priest, attempting to limit the celebration of a pre-Christian rite, insists that the women celebrate the Ascension Day liturgy and then process to the field with crosses and church banners; he then blesses the field.  Older women in the village dutifully celebrate Ascension Day in the morning, but then return to the field in larger numbers in the afternoon to celebrate their own, ancient rite.

Ушэсьце адзначаецца на саракавы дзень пасля Вялікадня і супадае з дахрысьціянскім абрадам “Пахаваньне стралы”, падчас якога жанчыны (пераважна сталага ўзросту) ідуць у жытняе поле, закопваюць востры прадмет, качаюцца ў жыце і нясуць дахаты няцотную колькасьць каласкоў. Гэты абрад захаваўся толькі ва ўсходняй Беларусі ў некаторых вёсках Веткаўскага і Чачэрскага раёнаў Гомельскай вобласьці. У Стаўбуне праваслаўны сьвятар спрабуе обмежаваць выкананьне дахрысьціянскага абраду. Пасля сьвяточнай службы з нагоды Ўшэсьця ён узначальвае працэсію жанчын з крыжамі і харугвамі; працэсія кіруецца да жытняга поля, якое сьвятар дабраслаўляе. Старэйшыя жанчыны абавязкова наведваюць службу ўранку на Ўшэсьце, але потым ідуць на тое ж поле ў другой палове дня з іншымі жанчынамі, каб выканаць абрад па ўласным старажытным звычаі.
