Until the Soviet authorities “ameliorated” so much of the Pripet Marshes out of existence and radically distorted the region’s ecology and environment, Polesians traveled much more by boat. One now rarely has the privilege to see a Polesian poling quietly through the marshes on a locally-made boat (chovjen’ or dub, the latter word — meaning oak — reflecting that these boats used to be made from hollowed-out oak trunks).

Although the feast of Peter and Paul, June 29, fell on a workday in 2010, both the mass at 10 a.m. and celebratory mass at 1:00 p.m. at Iuje’s parish church of the Apostles Peter and Paul were standing-room only. A bow to Father Jan and the whole parish.
Нягледзячы на тое, што 29 чэрвеня, на Сьвятых Пятра і Паўла, быў працоўны дзень, у парафіяльным касьцёле Апосталаў Пятра і Паўла ў Іўі і падчас ранішняй імшы, і падчас сьвяточнай імшы а трынаццатай гадзіне, запозьненым наведвальнікам сесьці не было дзе. Паклон Айцу Яну і ўсім парафіянам.

Evangelical Protestantism has had a quiet, reverent, enduring presence in the Central Pripet region for a century. On July 4 a great multitude from the Al’shany area of Polesia gathered to witness the total-immersion baptism of more than 90 people.
It is striking to see how the dress and manner of younger members of the communities combine tradition and modernity.
Ужо на працягу стагоддзя эвангельскі пратэстантызм лагодна, трывала і пабожна жыве на Сярэдняй Прыпяці. Чацьвёртага ліпеня мноства людзей з Альшанаў і навакольных сёлаў прысутнічала на цырымоніі, падчас якой прынялі хрост больш як дзевяноста чалавек.
Нейкім неверагодным чынам адзеньне і паводзіны маладзейшых сябраў суполак адлюстроўваюць і традыцыі, і сучаснасьць.

Evangelical Protestantism has had a quiet, reverent, enduring presence in the Central Pripet region for a century. On July 4 a great multitude from the Al’shany area of Polesia gathered to celebrate the total-immersion baptism of more than 90 people.
This baptism ceremony occurs semi-annually. It was a moving experience to attend this ceremony and to witness the dignity, modesty and devotion of people committed to God, family, and hard work.

Ужо на працягу стагоддзя эвангельскі пратэстантызм лагодна, трывала і пабожна жыве на Сярэдняй Прыпяці. Чацьвёртага ліпеня мноства людзей з Альшанаў і навакольных сёлаў прысутнічала на цырымоніі, падчас якой прынялі хрост больш як дзевяноста чалавек.
Магчымасьць стаць сьведкам гэтай велічнай цырымоніі, што цяпер адбываецца два разы на год, – гэта надзвычайны гонар. Незабыўна і глыбока кранала тое, з якой годнасьцю, сьціпласьцю і верай людзі прысьвячаюць сваё жыцьцё Богу, сям’і й працы.
