Evangelical Protestant Baptism I, Al’shany 2010/Эвангельскае хрышчэньне I, Альшаны 2010 год

Evangelical Protestantism has had a quiet, reverent, enduring presence in the Central Pripet region for a century.  On July 4 a great multitude from the Al’shany area of Polesia gathered to witness the total-immersion baptism of more than 90 people.

This baptism ceremony occurs semi-annually.  It was a great privilege and moving experience to attend this ceremony and to witness the dignity, modesty and devotion of people committed to God, family, and hard work.

Ужо на працягу стагоддзя эвангельскі пратэстантызм лагодна, трывала і пабожна жыве на Сярэдняй Прыпяці. Чацьвёртага ліпеня мноства людзей з Альшанаў і навакольных сёлаў прысутнічала на цырымоніі, падчас якой прынялі хрост больш як дзевяноста чалавек.

Магчымасьць стаць сьведкам гэтай велічнай цырымоніі, што цяпер адбываецца два разы на год, – гэта надзвычайны гонар. Незабыўна і глыбока кранала тое, з якой годнасьцю, сьціпласьцю і верай людзі прысьвячаюць сваё жыцьцё Богу, сям’і й працы.

The Cross II/Крыж (частка ІI)

One of the most evocative sights in Belarus is the cross, placed at a village crossroad or along the road in the countryside.  I have been inspired to photograph crosses in great part by the timeless ethnographic-photographic study “Беларускія народныя Крыжы” (“Belarusan Folk Crosses”) of Mikhas’ Ramanjuk (1944-1997), published by his son Dzjanis.  In my experience Dzjanis Ramanjuk continues to be the best ethnographer-photographer, and one of the best landscape photographers, working in Belarus today.

The Orthodox cross in today’s photo is found on the outskirts of the mixed Roman Catholic-Orthodox village of Pras’tsi in Njasvizh District of Mjensk Region.  Pras’tsi was a seat of the noble Pratasjevich (Protasewicz) family.

The Bench III/Лаўка (частка ІII)

What can seem more prosaic than the plain wooden bench in front of almost every village house in Belarus?  And yet the bench is the pivot of social life, the village agora, the permanent observation post.  The bench is the witness to the changing fortunes of the village and at the same time a testament to Belarusianness beyond time.  Together with the fence behind it, the bench is the clubhouse for the bands of kids visiting granny for the summer.  It is the place where men gather on a holiday to tell fishing tales.  It is the place where, after a long day’s work or in the later years of her life, the homeowner sits to take in the afternoon sun, to let the evening meal simmer, to chat with neighbors, to wait for the cow to come home, to observe the passing traffic, to guide the stranger asking for directions — and, having sized him up in an instant, to give him spirited advice about life.

Што можа здавацца больш празаічным за звычайную драўляную лаўку, што ёсьць ледзьве не перад кожным вясковым беларускім домам? Але менавіта вакол лаўкі круціцца мясцовае грамадскае жыцьцё. Лаўка – вясковая агора. Лаўка – сталы пост, сведка зьменлівасьці фартуны і адначасова сьведчаньне пра пазачасную беларускасьць. Разам з плотам лаўка – месца збору цэлых бандаў дзяцей, падкінутых бабулям на лета. Гэта месца, дзе ў сьвяточны дзень мужчыны зьбіраюцца пагутарыць пра рыбалку. Гэта месца, дзе гаспадынька можа пасядзець, пагрэцца ў ласкавых промнях перадвечаровага сонца і паразмаўляць з суседзямі, пакуль згатуецца ў печцы вячэра, пакуль карова прыйдзе дадому. Гэта месца, адкуль выгодна паглядзець на мінакоў, і калі вандроўнік папытаецца дарогі, імгненна ўбачыць яго навылёт і даць добразычлівыя жыцьцёвыя парады.

As with so many other villages in the Vitebsk Region of Northern Belarus, Jatsuki has lost much of its population to urban migration.  However, favored by its position on a bluff over the Dzvina River, Jatsuki is seeing more and more city families buying old houses or building new cottages as summer retreats.
