On September 17, 1939, in the framework of the secret annex to the Soviet-Nazi Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, and while Germany was well into its invasion of Poland from the west, the Soviet Union invaded Poland from the east.  The Soviet regime occupied, annexed, and imposed thorough Sovietization on western Belarus in the 21 months before the German invasion of the Soviet Union.  Western Belarus had been incorporated into the interwar Republic of Poland under the 1921 Polish-Soviet Treaty of Riga.  The Soviets re-imposed their order after pushing the Germans out in 1944.

Sapotskin lies in the very northwest corner of Belarus.  In their churchyard the people of Sapotskin have erected three memorials.  These photos are from August 15, 2009.

There is something deeply comforting in the natural light that suffuses a Belarusian home.  This is a light as ineffable and timeless as it is bound to place and season.  Сонечнае сьвятло напаўняе беларускі дом і робіць яго невымоўна ўтульным. Гэтае сьвятло і няўлоўнае, і вечнае, і непарыўна зьвязанае са сваім месцам і сваім часам.

A striking reminder that summer is ending is the mid- to late-August mass migration of storks from Belarus to their winter home in the Nile Delta.  Groups of storks assemble into large flocks and, wheeling and spiraling to catch favorable air currents, soar off to the south.  Fledglings, forced to sleep away from the nest once they can fly, depart a week or more before their parents.

On my way to the August 15 Assumption Day mass in Dudy in the northwestern Grodno region, I watched this flock of fledglings form up and fly off over the village of Ljeljuki.

15 жніўня, на Ўнебаўзяцьце, я ехаў на ўрачыстую імшу ў Дуды і мне пашчасьціла ўбачыць, як буські зьбіраюцца ў вырай і ляцяць над вёскай Лелюкі.
