The feast of the Dormition is one of the Twelve Great Feasts in the Orthodox calendar.  The Dormition, equivalent to the August 15 Roman Catholic feast of the Assumption, is normally celebrated August 28.  However, the village of Rubjel’ in the central Pripet Marshes celebrates the feast August 29, both to avoid overlapping with the celebration of the feast in the next village and to commemorate the date of the laying of the new church’s cornerstone in 1992.

Rubjel’, whose other Orthodox church is an architectural masterpiece from 1796, is one of a series of Pripet villages which stoutly resisted the Soviets’ attempt to close churches, wipe out the Christian faith, and impose atheism. The church choir, shown here, is one of the best in the region.

As in the photo for August 23, here we see how storks prefer to nest on a thatched roof, even a roof in disrepair.  What is also interesting is the juxtaposition of the traditional, now-uninhabited log cabin and, reflecting growing prosperity in this area of the Pripet Marshes, the hothouses full of cucumbers grown for the Russian market and the newer, large brick house in the background.

Storks, revered by Belarusians, prefer to nest on thatched roofs, even roofs which have fallen into disrepair as here.  The danger is that this roof will decay to the point where there is no will to repair it (endangering these nests) or no expert thatcher available — most Belarusian thatchers have gone to Poland, where there is a continuing demand for thatched roofs.

Farewell to the Storks.  Да пабачэньне ўвесну.

In mid-August, wheeling higher and higher in the sky, storks come together in large flocks to begin their annual autumn migration to Egypt.  The storks normally depart around the time of the feast of the Transfiguration (Apple-Blessing Feast), August 19.  This is a poignant moment:  one knows these village companions for the past five months must depart; one hopes they will survive the arduous autumn journey and the arduous return the next spring.
