Early Spring, Azdamichy 2012.

Fixing or replacing a fence is one of the first tasks villagers undertake in early spring.  It’s always a pleasure to see the pride and care homeowners take in keeping their wooden fences in good order.

April Evening, Mjensk 2001.

The glow of mid-April light in Belarus brings one a sense of calm:  dawn is now much earlier and the evening light lingers longer each day; the tail end of winter is now definitely behind one.

A photo from 2001.  Given the type of development which the authorities have promoted since then, it gets more difficult each day to find views of Mjensk which give one a sense of the city’s thousand-year history.  For the heavy impact of development see, for example, the photo of the day for December 19, 2012, which shows a late 2012 view just to the left of this photo.

Belarus in Faces (part LXXVII):  Mrs. Maryja, Kuranjets 2012 and 2013.

Kuranjets is now classified a village but retains a large central square, lined with solid masonry buildings, from when it was a bustling market town.  Today its curved, tree-lined streets are peaceful, but part of Napoleon’s army camped here on its 1812 retreat from Moscow.  The village has a monument to insurgents killed in the area in the 1863 uprising against the Russian empire and graves of Polish soldiers who lost their lives fighting against advancing Bolshevik troops in 1920.

In August 2012, as we wandered through Kuranjets looking unsuccessfully for the monument to 1863 and the Polish graves, we saw Mrs. Maryja sitting by her front door.  She modestly and kindly pointed us in the right direction.

In late March we stopped by to give Mrs. Maryja a copy of the portrait from last August.  Captivated by her quiet radiance in the early spring light, we asked permission to take another portrait.

Polish-Era Primary School, Kamjenka 2013.

This building is an example — rarely found in such a well-preserved state in Belarus — of the harmonious Zakopane style used in the 1920s and 1930s, when western Belarus lay in the inter-war Polish Republic.
