In 2005 John Kunstadter retired from the U.S. Foreign Service, having been posted three times in Turkey; in Bulgaria; in the Department of State as Country Officer for Tunisia, Senior Country Officer for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Deputy Office Director for Central Asia; in the U.S. Mission to the UN in New York; and as Deputy Chief of Mission in Belarus in 2000-2001. Now a full-time free-lance photographer, he has held individual exhibitions in Washington (1997); Ankara (2000, 2002, 2003, 2005); in Harodnja (2008) and Pastavy (2008) in Belarus; and at the UN Secretariat Building in New York in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN. He also participated in three joint exhibitions at the National Library of Belarus (2006-2007) and has given a series of photographs on long-term loan to the Belarusan embassy in Ankara.

У 2005 годзе Джон Кунстадтэр пайшоў у адстаўку з амэрыканскай дыпляматычнай службы, падчас якой працаваў тры тэрміны ў Турцыі, у Баўгарыі, у Дзярждэпартамэнце ў якасьці рэфэрэнта па Тунісе, старэйшага рэфэрэнта па Эстоніі, Латвіі і Літве, намесьніка кіраўніка аддзела Цэнтральнай Азіі, у Нью-Ёрку ў Сталай місіі ЗША ў ААН, а таксама ў Беларусі ў якасьці намесьніка амбасадара ў 2000‐2001 гг. Цяпер ён увесь свой час прысьвячае фатаграфіі. Пэрсанальныя выставы прайшлі ў Вашынгтоне (1997), Анкары (2000, 2002, 2003, 2005), Гародні (2008), Паставах (2008), і ў ААН у Нью-Ёрку супольна са Сталым прадстаў ніцтвам Беларусі ў ААН. I am not familiar with Belarus so I find the photographs on this site very beautiful as well as useful in expanding my knowledge.

I enjoy your work very much. Your connection with the people and traditions allow you to capture sweet, intimate moments that most foreigners would be excluded from, or wouldn’t understand, or never have the opportunity to witness.
I, too, am an American shooting in BY. Much in the Chernobyl zone near Bragin, a little all over the country.

I met you in 2001 with a group of Americans from WA state providing a Business Week venture to Belarusian students. I am in awe of your prints; I just found your web site and have subscribed to it. It is a side of Belarus that we don’t get to see much of, but add so much depth and insight into the Belarusian culture; it is wonderful.
