Orthodox St. George’s Day falls on May 6. The date traditionally marked the day when villagers led their cows in procession out to pasture for the first time in the year. Here women from the Polesian village of Bjarezhtsy, having returned from a rye field where they sang St. George’s Day songs and prayed to God for a prosperous season, stop to sing and pray at each roadside cross in the village.

To commemorate the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’s Constitution of May 3, 1791. З нагоды Дня Канстытуцыі 3-га траўня.
In reaction to this democratic document, Europe’s first modern national constitution, the Russian Empire launched a war which led to the second, and then the third partition of Poland, wiping Poland off the map until 1918. Tadeusz Kosciuszko (Tadevush Kas’tsjushka in Belarusian), scion of a noble Belarusian family and a man whose efforts were integral to the success of the American Revolution, fought courageously but in vain against the Russians. He was born near the town of Kosava in today’s Bjeras’tsje (Brest) Region.
