Photo of the Day for March 16, 2014

Patrimony of Lida District (part III).

Churches of Belarus (part LV):  Orthodox Church of the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God (1865-1869), Radzivonishki 2014.

This photo is from a day-long survey of the patrimony of western Lida District and of Iuje District with Anton Astapovich, chairman of the Belarusian Association for the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments (БДТАПГК).  The church in Radzivonishki is a good example of a so-called Muravjouka, the series of churches built by Russian imperial authorities and the Russian Orthodox church to impose the Moscow Patriarch’s authority and to Russify the lands of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after the abortive uprising of 1863-1864 (see the photos of the day for March 9, 2014).
