The Belarusian word khutar (хутар) denotes a homestead, a small farm away from the village. The word embodies the Belarusian desire to be one’s own man. Not even the depredations of the last 90 years in Belarus have been able to suppress the common Belarusian’s dream to own and run his own homestead free from the interference of bureaucrats, inspectors and swarms of other officials.
The winding roads of western and northern Belarus are full of gifts: one rounds a curve to find a timeless homestead surrounded by timeless orchard and fields.
