Everything in its place: the end of the harvest season and feast of Pakrou. Усё на сваім месцы.
Belarusians across their homeland work diligently to complete the harvest and to prepare their gardens and fields for winter by the Orthodox feast of Pakrou (see also photo for October 14). This photo shows a classic scene in the Central Prypjats’ region of Polesia: the yard re-swept clean, the manure in neat rows ready to be spread, the cucumber hothouse stripped of its worn plastic covering and the strings for cucumber vines carefully gathered.
When I stopped to take this photo on October 11, the lady of the house, crossing her yard, asked humorously what I was photographing. “The masterly order of your yard, your hard work, and your pride of ownership.” She smiled in that modest, deep Polesian way and proceeded with her task.
Як і скрозь па Беларусі, на Палесьсі заўсёды сьпяшаюцца скончыць усе працы на зямлі да Пакравоў і спадзяюцца на спрыяльнае надвор’е ў гэты адказны час. Ладны двор – дагледжаныя дрэвы, падмеценыя дарожкі, прыбраны парнік, угноеная глеба – гэта аксіома для кожнага працаздольнага чалавека. Тым не менш, у адказ на заўвагу пра тое, з якім клопатам, з якім майстэрствам агарод ці поле прыгатаваныя да зімы, кожная гаспадыня сьціпла, спагадліва і ўдзячна ўсьміхнецца. Так, праца гэтая цяжкая. І яе вельмі лёгка не заўважаць.
