Photo of the Day for September 21, 2011: Feast of the Assumption I / Унебаўзяцьця І

Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (part I), Church of the Assumption, Mjory 2011.

Mjory in northern Belarus has a strong parish and the church’s noon-time feast day Mass on August 15 was standing room only despite falling on a workday.

The Roman Catholic mass for the Feast of the Assumption traditionally includes the blessing of a bouquet or basket of flowers, not only in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary but also in hope of a bountiful harvest.

  1. Beautiful, John.

I appreciate your permitting me to show two of your photographs of this custom from Dzjatlava (2008). The people in Denver were very moved to see these last week. We focused on the flowers and herbs as gifts — both offered to the Virgin Mary on the Assumption and returned from Mary to bless the homes and health of parishioners.

    1. Thank you again for your continuing interest. I am very grateful to you for showing the Dzjatlava photos and pleased your audience appreciated them.
