Photos of the Day for April 27, 2016

Photographic expedition to Hantsavichy (Khatsinavichy) and Pinsk (Dabraslauka, Lyshcha, Zapol’lje, Pinsk, Pinkavichy, Kupjatsichy, Haradzishcha, Vylazy, Parakhonsk, Soshna, Kamjen’, Pahost-Zaharodski) Districts with Anton Astapovich, Chairman of the Belarusian Association for the Preservation of Cultural and Historical Monuments (БДТАПГК).

Part VI/VIII:  Parakhonsk.  Parakhonsk was the birthplace and residence of the famous interwar photographer of Polesia Zofia Chomętowska.  The Orthodox church of the Birth of the Holy Mother of God (1888) is a splendid example of Belarusian Orthodox wooden church architecture from the late 19th century.  Indeed, one sees elements of proto-Art Nouveau (“style moderne”) in the external decorations.  For another example of this style, see, for instance, the 1880s Orthodox churches of St. George in Slabodka of Stoubtsy District (photos of the day for March 28, 2015), St. George in Ljeshnja or the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God in Jodchytsy (both in Kapyl’ District, to feature in photos of the day later in the spring).  The recent removal of the trees surrounding the church in Parakhonsk has left it looking forlorn in the surrounding featureless space.

Rarely is the traveler fortunate to encounter apartment buildings which suggest their architect strove to rise above the normal soulless or brutalist style.  The first blocks here allude to the constructivist tradition which enlivened interwar architecture.  The faceted corner of the block in the second photo (from my 2013 visit) conveys a quirky, dynamic feel rather than the sense of indifference to a human scale projected by so many apartment blocks in Belarus.
