Triple Christening, Al’homjel’ (Ohljamjel’) 2011. The priest of the Orthodox Church of Mary Magdalene arranged to christen three families’ newborns — Jaroslav, Cyril and Sofia — at the same time. Here the priest clips strands of hair from four places (representing the four points of the cross) on Sofia’s head. The hair is placed in the paper cone held by Sofia’s Godmother, who will fasten the cone to the back of the icon which Sofia’s Godparents purchased to mark her christening. In the Orthodox tradition only the Godparents take part in the ceremony; parents are not allowed.
