Granny Tonja, Latyhal’, January 2014. Granny Tonja watched me photographing the church of St. Michael across the street. We chatted about the parish and the upcoming feast of the Presentation in the Temple (February 15, equivalent to February 2 in the Orthodox Julian calendar).
There are several villages named Latyhal’ scattered through the northern half of Belarus. Latyhal’ is a Baltic toponym, related to Latgale, one of the four main cultural-historical regions of Latvia. The name suggests that the original inhabitants of this settlement were Lats.
A delightful vignette. Thank you for connecting us to the people.
Thank you!
