The area either side of today’s boundary between Viljejka and Lahojsk Districts in Mjensk Region and Dokshytsy District in Vitsjebsk Region is, as it was historically, fairly sparsely populated. In parts the boundary also follows the course of the River Vilija, once an important transportation waterway through northwestern Belarus. The Vilija flows into Lithuania, where it becomes the Neris, which flows through Vilnius and empties into the Njoman at Kaunas.
