Lard (sala – сала) is revered in Belarus — and even more so in Ukraine — as a source of energy in winter and as a tasty spread on bread. Here Vasil’ Pjetrusjevich, a farmer and master hog butcher, carefully packs strips of lard for storage from a hog he has recently butchered.
