A solid, well-crafted, well-ordered house. A tidy yard. Seemingly prosaic things. Yet one finds the essence of the Belarusan architectural and cultural heritage in both.
Older, thatched-roof wooden houses with their cleanly-swept yards and wooden fences represent this heritage in a classic way. At the same time, among the newer brick houses which have become the standard sight throughout Belarus, some stand out as exemplars of craftsmanship and carriers of this heritage. The owner-builder of this house was working on his truck-gardening transport van as I stopped to take a photo. He smiled and quietly nodded his thanks when I expressed admiration for his mastery as a mason and for the order of his homestead.
