A panjekhida is an Eastern Orthodox memorial service for a deceased family member just before or on the 40th day; those attending pray for the acceptance of the deceased into heaven. In the Polesian villages of Tsjerablichy and Azdamichy attendees join the priest in waving a long linen runner to help the deceased’s soul on its ascent to heaven.
