Grave of Belarusian novelist, screenwriter, essayist and civic activist Aljes’ Adamovich (1927-1994), Hlusha.

Gravetone from Boulder Museum in Mjensk, inscription by Belarusian sculptor Valjar’jan Yanushkjevich.

Aljes’ Adamovich participated as a partisan in the war against the German occupation and subsequently wrote about the war in a humanist rather than triumphalist way.  He also willingly wrote some of his works in Russian.  Therefore, the occupying Soviet authorities tolerated Adamovich’s artistic work.  On the other hand Adamovich shared the desire of other great Belarusian writers such as Vasil’ Bykau, Uladzimjer Karatkjevich, and Ryhor Baradulin to contribute to the spiritual and cultural revival of the Belarusian nation.  As a result, the current regime has ignored Adamovich and his literary achievements as a Belarusian humanist.
