Crimean Tatar aggression against the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (VKL), of which the Belarusian lands were a part, continued for centuries.  At the same time, starting with a decision by Grand Duke Vitautas the Great in 1397, the VKL invited disaffected Tatar groups to settle in the Grand Duchy as border guards and as elements of the VKL’s army.  These settlements becamse an integral part of the Grand Duchy and its successor, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.  Reflecting this long-term presence, there are more than 30 extant Tatar — or Belarusian Muslim — cemeteries in the lands of today’s Belarus.
