Al’homjel’ 2011. This view shows a plot freshly-planted with potatoes, a crop with a central place in Belarusian cuisine. One also sees several of the area’s numerous cucumber hothouses whose produce, sold to the Russian market, has brought prosperity and attendant significant population growth to Al’homjel’ and nearby villages. In the background is the older (1817) of Al’homjel’s two side-by-side Orthodox churches; behind it the dome of the newer (1994) church.
