Preparing for Trinity Sunday, Zapjasochcha 2010/Падрыхтоўка да Тройцы, Запясочча 2010 год
This granny is on her way to her church on May 22, the Saturday before Trinity in 2010, to lay reeds on the floor of the nave. To mark Trinity Belarusans spread marsh reeds (recalling that Christ’s first disciples were fishermen) in the entryway of their home, on the ground before the church, and in the nave of the church. They also hang branches of young birch (or sometimes poplar or oak, but the birch, which leafs earlier, is seen as especially symbolic of the fertile power of the soil and in a Christian sense symbolic of the life-giving force of the Holy Spirit) beside the doorway to their home, the entrance to the church, and within the church.
