This photo is from a day-long survey of the patrimony of western Lida District and of Iuje District with Anton Astapovich, chairman of the Belarusian Association for the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments (БДТАПГК). Mikalaeva sits on the right bank of the River Njoman, the principal river of western-northwestern Belarus. Now well off the beaten track, Mikalaeva was once an important river crossing point. Overlooking the river, the church sits on a rise at the southern end of the village square; fortunately the church preserves its original cupolas.
