To commemorate the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’s Constitution of May 3, 1791. In reaction to this democratic document, Europe’s first modern national constitution, the Russian Empire launched a war which led to the second, and then the third partition of Poland. Tadeusz Kosciuszko (Tadevush Kas’tsjushka in Belarusan), a scion of a noble Belarusan family and a man whose efforts were integral to the success of the American Revolution, fought nobly but in vain against the Russians. He was born near the town of Kosava in today’s Bjeras’tsje (Brest) Region.
