Photo of the Day for May 4, 2012: Orthodox St. George’s Day / Юр’е

Orthodox St. George’s Day falls on May 6.  The date traditionally marked the day when villagers led their cows in procession out to pasture for the first time in the year.  Here women from the Polesian village of Bjarezhtsy, stopping to call their neighbors to join them, walk in procession to a rye field on the edge of the village.  Men are chosen to hold the standards and a plant (symbols of fertility).  In the field the women will sing St. George’s Day songs and pray to God for a prosperous season.
