Harvest season is one of the busiest and most tension-filled times of the year as Belarusian village families strive to bring in their crops before bad weather sets in. A bountiful crop of potatoes, pumpkins, cabbage and — later — carrots and beets, in addition to apples and pears, is key to health and good morale through the long, harsh winters. In addition to the gardens surrounding their houses, extended families work whichever allotments the local collective farm parcels out.
