In the cycle of the year, Pakrou, celebrated on October 14, marks the traditional end of work in field and garden. Parishioners pray for the protection of the Holy Mother of God through the winter and for Her intervention to ensure that the ground is fertile for the next year’s cycle.
These women’s faces reflect the stoic Christian faith at the heart of the Belarusian character: relief that the harvest is in, the strength to have borne the daily chores in field and barnyard and in tending hearth and home, determination to carry on through the coming winter, hope for the next year.
