Two thousand thirteen marks the sesquicentennial of the Uprising of 1863-64 against the occupying Russian Empire. This campaign was a heroic but tragic struggle for national independence and the restoration in its pre-1772 borders of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which had been extinguished in three late-18th century partitions of Commonwealth lands by Russia, Austria and Prussia. On May 22 (old-style) 1863 a force of 800 insurgents defeated a much larger, much-better equipped Russian imperial force at Milavidy on the main Brest-Moscow highway in western Belarus. This victory gave strong if brief impetus to the overall uprising under Kastus’ Kalinouski: Russian imperial forces eventually crushed the uprising; Kalinouski was hanged; and severe repressions followed under Governor-General Mikhail Muravev.
Today’s post is the first of several dedicated to the sesquicentennial of the Uprising. These posts are prompted by the call of the Belarusian Association for the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments (Беларускае дабраахвотнае таварыства аховы помнікаў гісторыі і культуры) for the granting of protected status to (now neglected) monuments erected under the Second Polish Republic in the 1920s and 1930s in honor of the Uprising. Калі ўжо рабіць прапановы на наданне статусу гісторыка-культурнай каштоўнасці, то рабіць. Тым больш, што пад аховай дзяржавы толькі невялічкая частка ўсіх аб’ектаў, якія з гонарам могуць юрыдычна быць помнікамі гісторыі і культуры. І сярод пакінутых увагай і юрыдычнай абаронай помнікаў аб’екты, звязаныя з гераічнымі і адначасна трагічнымі падзеямі паўстання 1863 – 1864 гг.
Наступны год юбілейны. Паўтары стагоддзя будзе, як прагучалі першыя стрэлы змагання за Вашу і нашу свабоду. І, як ні дзіўна, у нас на Беларусі не ўшанаваны практычна аніводзін аб’ект, звязаны з мінулай гераічнай старонкай нашай гісторыі. Нават мемарыял на месцы Мілавідскай бітвы не мае статуса помніка.
Памылкі трэба выпраўляць. Таму Таварыства аховы помнікаў пачынае распрацоўку і падачу ў Міністэрства культуры прапаноў на наданне статуса памятным месцам паўстання 1863 г. І першыя прапановы – па мемарыялу на месцы бітвы пад Мілавідамі, па магілах паўстанцаў у Косаве і Плябані.
