Wooden shingles demand constant upkeep lest they warp, split and decay. The master craft of roofing with wooden shingles has all but died out as villages depopulate or villagers use easier-to-maintain roofing materials; it is now exceedingly rare to find an intact wooden-shingle roof in Belarus. This photo is thus a paean to craftsmanship and expresses the hope that wooden shingles will return to use again.
