Remains of former Narkjevich-Jodka estate “Pukhava” (Sunai).
An illustrious and industrious noble family in the Belarusian lands of the Rzeczpospolita (union of the kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania), the Narkjevich-Jodkas built or — as here at “Pukhava” — came into the possession of large estates in central Belarus. By the late 19th century, with this part of the former Rzeczpospolita still under Russian imperial occupation, “Pukhava” was renowned for its productivity in grain cultivation.
The Soviet occupations of eastern and then western Belarusian lands and subsequent confiscation and collectivization dealt a serious blow to Belarus’ patrimony of estate architecture and landscapes. Arson by Soviet partisans during World War II, Soviet re-occupation, and degradation and destruction of former estates by authorities and collective-farm managements continually since World War II have completed the devastation of almost all of this patrimony, including “Pukhava”. The photos below show the condition of the former estate in early 2016.
