Radaunitsa (Orthodox Eastertide commemoration of the dead), Tsjerablichy 2014.

Радаўніца, Цераблічы 2014 г.

Radaunitsa is the most important Orthodox commemoration of the dead in the Belarusian cycle of the year:  people often travel considerable distances back to their native village or town to clean and to honor their forebears’ graves.

In most Belarusian parishes, Radaunitsa is observed on the second Tuesday after Orthodox Easter; in Tsjerablichy it has been the custom to observe Radaunitsa a day earlier, on the second Monday after Easter.

There is no chapel at the old cemetery in the middle of the village.  Until Tsjerablichy’s church was consecrated in September 2014, the priest for the combined parish of Azdamichy-Tsjerablichy held a Radaunitsa commemoration service in the open air at the old cemetery and, in the past several years, also at the cemetery chapel by the new cemetery outside the village.
