Presentation of Nadzja’s newborn son Ivan.  Tsjerablichy 2019.

It is an Orthodox Christian tradition to have the priest present a newborn child to God around the baby’s 40th day.  The tradition evokes both the presentation of Jesus in the temple (Meeting at the Temple or Strechan’nje, the Orthodox equivalent of Candlemas, celebrated February 15 in the traditional Orthodox calendar) and the presentation of the Virgin Mary in the temple (December 4 in the traditional Orthodox calendar).  The priest carries a baby boy behind the iconostasis and around the altar; he would present a baby girl only in front of the iconostasis.
