I spotted Tats’tsjana hard at work in her yard as I passed through Antseljeushchyna to visit the World War I cemetery in the neighboring village of Hrushoushchyna.
Not wanting to disturb her, I did not stop to ask directions, but forged ahead, only to have the car slide back down the muddy, rutted track. Approaching Tats’tsjana, I apologized for interrupting her work and asked how to get to Hrushoushchyna. She laughed and said I had picked the wrong time of year to visit — the road was impassable to normal vehicles in the March mud. If I returned later in spring, she would be happy to show me the way. I thanked her and offered to take her portrait. After a bit of Belarusian negotiation (prymus — прымус) I received her permission on condition I include her eldest grandson, who had approached to find out what this stranger with a camera was doing.

After further discussion, I was able to take a portrait of Tats’tsjana’s daughter with all her three sons (Tats’tsjana’s grandsons).
