World War I cemeteries (part XLV): German World War I cemetery.
The German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge — Volksbund) was formed in 1919 to maintain German World War I cemeteries. During the interwar Second Polish Republic the Volksbund supported the Polish authorities’ meticulous upkeep of the German cemeteries (many of which also included graves of soldiers of the opposing Russian Imperial Army) on Polish territory, which included the lands of western Belarus.
Aljanova is one of the German World War I cemeteries which, since 1991, the Volksbund has helped restore in cooperation with Belarusian local historians and volunteers after decades of neglect and depredation under Soviet occupation. The gravestones are by now too covered in moss to be able to read what unit(s) the men buried here were from.
