Pentecost: Papshychy 2019 (I/XIV).
Long ago the residents of Papshychy in the Hlybokaje District of northern Belarus were miraculously spared death from a plague which ravaged the surrounding area. To commemorate their forefathers’ deliverance, villagers observe the feast of Pentecost by carrying a cloth, onto which people place offerings, in a procession from a roadside shrine at one end of the village to an early-morning Mass at the village’s cemetery chapel.
In 2014 I went to Papshychy to photograph the procession. However, wrongly advised regarding the starting time, I arrived to find the roadside shrine empty of people (see photo of the day for June 4, 2017), the procession already over and the Mass already beginning.
This year on Pentecost (June 9), I arrived in Papshychy at 5:00 a.m. The dawn and early morning light invited photos of the village as it stirred to life.

Каб шанаваць даўнае цудоўнае ўратаваньне вёскі ад смертную хваробу, рана раніцай на Спасланьне Сьвятога Духа вяскоўцы Папшыч зьбіраюцца ў адной з прыдарожных каплічак вёскі й носяць адмысловую намітку, тканую ў вёсцы, на могілкавую капліцу, ля якой сьвяткуюць сьвятую Імшу. Падчас працэсіі зьбіраюць ахвяры на намітцы.
У 2014 г. паехаў у Папшычы, каб здымаць цэлы абрад, хаця з-за памількавай парады наконт гадзіны пачатку, прапусьціў насеньне наміткі (гл. фотаздымак дня 4 чэрвеня 2017 г.).
Сёлета (9 чэрвеня) прыехаў у вёску а 5-ай раніцы. Пакуль чакаў абраду, выкарыстаў цудоўнае сьвітанкавае асьвятленьне, каб здымаць ранішнія віды.
