Aside from desecrating churches, it was a widespread practice under the Soviet regime to ruin their placement by erecting buildings which blocked a normal perspective toward the facade (e.g., Kreva, Kljetsk, the Roman Catholic cathedral in Mjensk). The stately facade of the church of the Assumption is similarly hemmed in by faceless Soviet blocks.
