Oak grove, Panjamon’ 2015. This open grove lies along the right bank of the River Njoman, the principal river of northwestern Belarus, which flows on to the Baltic Sea through Lithuania.
Storks still return to nest here, although in fewer numbers than in the past. Since we first visited in 2009, the part of the grove nearest the village has become seriously infested with scrub and pine trees — owing in great part, villagers tell us, to the precipitous decline in the number of cows, which used to graze the land, and to the collapse of the local collective farm. However, it remains a sheer pleasure to walk out among the oaks scattered through the fields and around an oxbow lake, to catch the reflection of the late afternoon and evening sky off the river, and to watch the storks and the fishermen.
