It is always inspiring to meet Christian volunteers engaged in pastoral and charitable work. The Brotherhood of St. Spyridon of Trimythous (Братэрства сьвяціцеля Спірыдона Трыміфунцкага, Братство святителя Спиридона Тримифунтского) is one such group. Under the spiritual guidance of Father Mikalaj Mazgou, priest of the Orthodox church of the Transfiguration in Zaslauje, half-an-hour from Mjensk, the 60 members of the brotherhood work tirelessly, especially in feeding and tending to patients with severe mental-neurological handicaps in six mental hospitals in the Mjensk region. I first heard Father Mikalaj preach when — to the great joy of the parish — he helped officiate at the 2013 feast of the Resurrection in his home village of Al’homjel’ in central Polesia. In April 2014 I called on Father Mikalaj in Zaslauje to give him a copy of the photo I had taken the previous year in Al’homjel’. He invited me to attend an upcoming special liturgy for the members of the brotherhood and their families. The photos for this week come from that liturgy and the celebration which followed.
