Eastertide rites in Belarus: preparation for Radaunitsa (honoring one’s forebears and other deceased close relatives), Tsjerablichy 2016. Radaunitsa is one of the most important rites of commemoration of the dead in the Belarusian cycle of the year. Radaunitsa falls on the Tuesday nine days after Easter.

Crosses of Belarus (part LIII): it is an ancient practice in Polesia (Pripet Marshes) to tie aprons around the crosses or tombstones on women’s graves.

Crosses of Belarus (parts LIV-LV): it is also an ancient Polesian tradition to tie new ribbons around crosses and tombstones in preparation for Radaunitsa. It is rare to see this shape in a grave cross in Belarus; resembling the Maltese cross, these are probably inspired by the Russian cross of St. George.

In Polesia it is a tradition to mark the graves of suicides with wooden posts without cross-arms.
