In the Orthodox tradition the priests and congregation process three times counter-clockwise around the church (Roman Catholics process clockwise). On the third circuit the procession stops at four points — symbolizing the cross — for a priest to read from the Gospels and to bless the church and the assembled congregation with holy water.
