Panikhida IІ. Паніхіда (частка ІІ).
A memorial service and memento mori, the panikhida may be served in Orthodox churches at the request of relatives of the deceased on specific days after a death. The church of the Holy Trinity in Azdamichy traditionally serves the panikhida on the 40th day, the day on which the deceased’s soul receives its final judgment at the Throne of God. What distinguishes the panikhida in Azdamichy is the priest and mourners’ tradition of grasping an extended runner (here waiting for the mourners to pick up) and waving it up and down to express the hope that the deceased’s soul will enter heaven.
