In honor of author Jan Barshcheuski (1794 (?)-March 12, 1851)/ У гонар Яна Баршчэўскага (1794 (?) – 12.03.1851)
A writer in Belarusan and Polish, Jan Barshcheuski was one of the founders of modern Belarusan literature. His works reflect his strong appreciation for the historical richness of the Polatsak region and the mystical character of that region and its people. He published his seminal work “Nobleman Zaval’nja, or Belarus in Tales of the Fantastic” (“Шляхціц Завальня, або Беларусь у фантастычных апавяданьнях”) in Polish in 1844-46. A full Belarusan translation was published in 1990.
The outstanding Belarusan historian and author Uladzimjer Arlou has an excellent essay on Barshcheuski in his book “Imjony svabody” (“Names for Liberty”, published in Belarusan by Radio Liberty in 2007, second edition 2009).
