Photos of the Day for March 16, 2018

Orthodox feast of the Baptism of Jesus/Theophany (known colloquially as Vadokhryshcha – Вадохрышча).  Tsjerablichy 2018.

Falling on January 19, Vadokhryshcha is one of the 12 great feasts in the Orthodox liturgical cycle.  Vadokhryshcha is the Orthodox Christian equivalent of Western Christian Epiphany (January 6).  In celebrating the baptism of Christ, Vadokhryshcha commemorates the Theophany, the first appearance of the Trinity to mankind (God revealing Himself through His voice, as the Holy Spirit descending on Christ, as Himself incarnate in Christ).  At the end of the liturgy, in remembrance of Christ’s baptism, the priest blesses water, which parishioners take home to ward off sickness and to keep their houses free of evil during the coming year.

Whereas in Azdamichy Father Aljaksandr blessed water inside the church, here in the next-door village of Tsjerablichy Father Vital’ chose to hold the blessing in the churchyard.
