Photos of the Day for March 9, 2016

Photo expedition to Smarhon’ and Ashmjany Districts (VII/XVI):   Ardashy 2016.

The toponym Ardashy is Tatar in origin.  The name reflects the influx of Tatars whom the Grand Duchy of Lithuania invited from the 14th to the 16th centuries to settle and serve as soldiers.  “Arda” is the Belarusian form of the Tatar (Turkic) “ordu”, which means army (and from which English derives the word “horde”); “dash” (Turkic daş) is a suffix meaning “fellow-“, e.g., as in “fellow-citizen” (vatandaş in Turkish).  Thus the village name appears to mean “comrades-in-arms”.  There is an old Tatar cemetery, which I did not visit on this expedition, southeast of Ardashy on the road to Kuty.
