Roadside allees so intimately form the patrimony of Belarus’ landscape and so memorably shape one’s journey. Yet in the past three years it has seemed that every passage along familiar roads risks provoking a new sense of loss.
Perhaps in this case local authorities wished to change a sweeping poplar allee into a line of tame, fastigiate shapes. However, the effect is forlorn.
