For the third time the Feast of the Ascension took me to the Roman Catholic parish of the Ascension in Dzjerkaushchyna in Hlybokaje District of the northern Belarusian region of Vitsjebsk. Трэці раз паехаў сьвяткаваць Унебаўзяцьце ў парафіі Ўнебаўзяцьця Пана ў Дзеркаўшчыне.

This time I decided to take advantage of the time before the start of the feast-day Mass to try to meet Mrs. S’tsjepanida Lupach, a renowned baxter of traditional Belarusian rye breads. Fortunately, Mrs. Lupach was home, and she welcomed me graciously. We had a long chat about how she came to Dzjerkaushchyna in 1959 from her native Kobryn District in western Polesia, how she raised her family, how she bought her wooden dzjezhka (container for letting the bread dough rise) more than 50 years ago, and how she has passed her knowledge and love of traditional Belarusian bread-making to her daughter and grandson.
Before showing me her bread-making utensils and samples of her bread, Mrs. Lupach invited me to visit the Orthodox church which she and others, through years of tireless effort, had managed to construct from a disused brick building and to decorate with an iconostasis by a local craftsman and a Deesis (raspjats’tsje – распяцьце in Belarusian: Christ on the Cross with the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist) from Polatsak.
Гэты раз, у чаканьні сьвятой Імшы, пашансавала мне пазнаёміцца з спадарыняй Сьцепанідай Лупач, вядомай майстрыхай-пекаркай традыцыйнага беларускага жытнёвага хлеба. Вельмі гасьцінна пагутарыла пра сваё жыцьцё, пра прыбыцьцё ў Дзяркаўшчыну са сваёй радной Кобрыншчыне ў 1959 г., пра сваю больш за 50-гадовую драўляную дзежку, пра перадачу традыцыі й любовы пякарства дачцы й унуку.
А перад тым, як паказала мне дзежку й узоры хлеба, спадарыня Сьцепаніда запрасіла мяне наведваць царкву, якую вялікім змаганьнем ёй з некалькі іншым вяскоўцам удалося стварыць і ўпрыгожыць.
